Global Settings and Fiscal Year

Company settings determine the framework of the organization.

Fiscal Year:
- Standard: Follows the Gregorian calendar but can start any month.
- Custom: Allows structures like 4-4-5 weeks. CAUTION! Once Custom Fiscal Year is enabled, it cannot be disabled and will permanently impact Forecasting reports.

Business Hours and Holidays:
Defines when the support team is available. Business Hours directly affect when Case escalation rules are triggered.

🎯 Key Points

  • βœ“ The 15-character Org ID is found in 'Company Information'
  • βœ“ Holidays must be associated with Business Hours to suspend support processes
  • βœ“ The Corporate Currency is the base for all exchange rates in Multi-Currency orgs
  • βœ“ Advanced Currency Management allows 'Dated Exchange Rates' for historical opportunities

My Domain and Access Security

My Domain is required to use Lightning Experience. It allows you to customize your org's URL (e.g., company.lightning.force.com).

Benefits:
- Highlight company branding on the login page.
- Requirement for Single Sign-On (SSO) and custom Lightning components.
- Allows blocking access from login.salesforce.com to force use of the corporate URL.

🎯 Key Points

  • βœ“ My Domain is necessary to use third-party AppExchange components
  • βœ“ Allows configuring different authentication methods on the login page
  • βœ“ If you change the My Domain name, old links will stop working after a redirection period

License Types in Detail

Many admins fail by not distinguishing between the 3 types of licenses:

1. User Licenses: The top level (Salesforce, Platform, Identity). Determines which Profiles the user can use.
2. Feature Licenses: Grants access to extra features not included in the base license (e.g., Marketing User, Knowledge User).
3. Permission Set Licenses: Allows assigning specific permissions to users incrementally.

🎯 Key Points

  • βœ“ The 'Salesforce Platform' license does not have access to standard CRM objects like Leads or Opportunities
  • βœ“ A user can only have one User License assigned at a time
  • βœ“ Feature Licenses are marked as checkboxes on the user record

Permission Set Groups (Advanced)

Introduced to simplify permission management.

How do they work? You bundle several Permission Sets into a single Group. This allows assigning a full job function (e.g., 'Senior Sales Rep') with a single click.

Muting Permission Set: A special component within a group used to *remove* a specific permission that one of the sets in the group grants, without modifying the original set.

🎯 Key Points

  • βœ“ A user can belong to multiple Permission Set Groups
  • βœ“ The Muting Permission Set only affects the group it is in, not individual Permission Sets
  • βœ“ Best practice: Use groups for roles and individual sets for specific skills
